Open House Celebration:
Thursday, September 15, 2011, 11 am until 2 pm

Reston, VA - In celebrating her first anniversary of moving her retail location toRestonTownCenter, May Bernhardt is ecstatic about the results of her decision. Her upscale floral studio, Mayflowers, has been providing artfully designed arrangements and accessories at different locations in Reston over the years, butRestonTownCenter has been the crescendo of the company’s success. “With higher visibility and the advantage of walk-in traffic, sales have increased,” says Bernhardt, designer/owner of Mayflowers. The additional benefit is more customers are discovering that Mayflowers is ‘fluent in the language of flowers’, and are being inspired by the beautifully decorated shop.

All are welcome to join in the celebration of the one-year anniversary at the Mayflowers Open House on Thursday, September 15 from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. with complimentary refreshments catered by Mon Ami Gabi. From September 15 through 18, in support of Reston Interfaith (RI), Mayflowers will be offering $10 “Bouquets To Go”, while supplies last, and all proceeds will be donated to RI’s “Help the Homeless” program.

This woman-owned business has had a banner year, and this past July Mayflowers received the ACE Award for Small Business of the Year from Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce. Ever since Mayflowers began, the company has routinely donated floral works and support to benefit charities and non-profit organizations such as Reston Interfaith, Greater Reston Arts Center, Best of Reston Awards, Reston Historic Trust’s Reston Home Tour, and Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce.

As part of the Mayflowers celebration, a private VIP reception is also in the works, includingRestonfounder Robert E. Simon, Jr. as a special guest.

Mayflowers is located at 11959 Market Street, Reston, VA 20190, in the The Promenade between Market Street and Democracy Drive at Reston Town Center*. R4 COLLECTION DAY

“Reduce. Re-use. Recycle. Reston!”
Wednesday, September 14, 2011 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Reston, VA – Reston Town Center announces the seventh R4 Collection Day: Reduce. Re-use. Recycle. Reston, and another green initiative, Solar Belly recycling and trash receptacles.

R4 Collection Day: Reduce. Re-use. Recycle. Reston is on Wednesday, September 14 from 1 pm until 4 pm in front of the Reston Town Center Pavilion,11900 Market Street,Reston,VA20190. To access the unloading area, vehicles can enter Market Street off Presidents Street at the east end of Reston Town Center (near Ann Taylor). No fees are charged for this collection service. (More details and collection list are below.)

Two Solar Belly receptacles are now in use near the Pavilion onMarket Street, the hub and main community gathering area ofRestonTownCenter. Using the power of the sun, the new Solar Belly units are independently compacting recyclables and trash on site. The units also have sign panels that help explain the workings of Solar Belly, and retailers are able to utilize the space to promote their businesses.

In an ongoing effort to provide awareness and options for disposal of items that can be diverted from landfill, RestonTownCenterwill accept specific items listed below at R4 Collection Day: Reduce. Re-use. Recycle. Reston. Information is also available at www.restontowncenter.com.

Reston Town Center is partnering with a number of groups that will be on site to collect used items for recycling and re-use, including: Bikes for the World (bicycle, sewing machine and hand tool collection); Reston Interfaith (winter coats); Reston Lions Club (eyeglasses, hearing aids); Secured Shred (document disposal on site); and Turtle Wings (computers and other electronics collection – removal and destruction of computer hard drives provided on site).

In the previous six R4 Collection Days, held twice a year since 2008, more than 65 tons of electronics and paper have been collected for recycling, and hundreds of items have been gathered for shipment to underprivileged areas nearby and around the world, including eyeglasses, winter coats, bicycles and portable sewing machines for repair and re-use. Tenants, local businesses, and residents have been very appreciative of this ‘green’ opportunity to safely dispose of items that can be recycled, and potentially put to good use, rather than put into the trash. Reston Town Center plans to continue holding this event as demand requires.

Only the items listed below will be accepted at the R4 Collection Day. NO hazardous waste items. Items will only be accepted from 1 pm until 4 pm, and must be delivered directly to the appropriate collection booth. Wishes = Buckets of Cash Donated to a Good Cause

Reston, VA – Mercury Fountain atRestonTownCenter is the venue’s major icon, meeting place, and cooling respite on a hot day, but over the years, it has also contributed thousands of dollars in donations to a community foundation, Character Counts! Coalition.

During the months of fountain operation, the many coins that have been deposited as wishes are retrieved by the maintenance crew. They deliver the heavy load – about 7 buckets of coins each year – to Character Counts! Coalition. The organization then undertakes a lengthy process before they can benefit from the windfall. The coins arrive wet, so must be spread out to dry, then sorted to remove buttons, gum, foreign coins and other debris. Each time, the result is about 4 quart-size zip lock bags of cold cash, which are taken to their bank’s coin machine for a tally of the deposit. All those fountain pennies and silver add up to about $1,500 in donations every year.

“We are very grateful for the donations,” says Cate Fulkerson, president of theRestonchapter of Character Counts! Coalition, explaining that the funds are a major support for the organization’s efforts, including Ethics Day withSouthLakesHigh Schooland the Annual Essay & Poster Contest.

Mercury Fountain, designed by Saint Clair Cemin of Brazil, has been in operation since 1990 and is maintained by Reston Town Center Association (RTCA). Topped by the Greek god of commerce and communications, Mercury, the Carrara marble fountain flows from early spring through late fall.

CHARACTER COUNTS! is a national, nonprofit, nonpartisan, character education initiative designed to help youngsters and adults develop and practice the basics of good character: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship. TheReston CHARACTER COUNTS! Coalition assists this effort by providing leadership, coordination, and resources to promote character development throughout the community. Coalition Members include Reston Association,RestonCommunity Center, Reston Interfaith, Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce, Reston Citizens Association, YMCA of Reston, and the office Fairfax County Hunter Mill District Supervisor, Cathy Hudgins.

Scythian to Play Reston Concerts on the Town Finale

Reston, VA—On August 27, local favorite SCYTHIAN will close out the 2011 season of Reston Concerts on the Town. Since going national in recent years, Scythian plays relatively few shows in the DC area, their hometown, so we are thrilled to welcome them to Reston.

Rousing and raucous, Scythian (sith-ee-yin) plays kicked-up Celtic and world music with hints of Gypsy and Klezmer, all infused with a touch of punk-rock sensibility. Take a pair of classically trained dueling fiddlers, toss in a rhythm guitar and the occasional funky accordion, then power it with the driving rhythm of a jazz percussionist, and you’ve got the ingredients for a show you won’t soon forget. Their high-energy, adrenaline-peddling, interactive brand of music has one goal in mind: to get people on their feet and dancing. Their repertoire ranges from traditional and contemporary Celtic and folk music to the alluring and dramatic strains of Gypsy and Eastern European tunes, and then crosses back over the border to pick up some good old-fashioned bluegrass licks.

Reston Concerts on the Town takes place at Reston Town Center’s Pavilion every Saturday night, June 4th thru August 27th, from 7:30 p.m. – 10 p.m., rain or shine. Thanks to a generous grant from the Reston Town Center Association, these concerts are free to the public. Music lovers of all ages are invited to bring blankets, lawn chairs, and picnics to the concerts each week and come ready to have a swingin’ good time.

New Orleans Piano Legend Henry Butler
to Play Reston Town Center

Reston, VA—New Orleans piano legend Henry Butler and his band NONYF will play Reston Concerts on the Town in Reston, Virginia on Saturday, June 11, from 7:30 p.m. – 10 p.m., rain or shine.

Butler, the man Dr. John calls, “the pride of New Orleans,” is considered by many to be the premier exponent of the great New Orleans jazz and blues piano tradition. Widely hailed as a pianist and vocalist both as a solo artist and with a variety of groups, Butler is equally respected for his versatile work as a composer and arranger in a broad range of genres.

Butler’s music is as rich and varied as the culture of his hometown of New Orleans. A soulful amalgam of jazz, blues, R&B, Caribbean, and classical influences, Butler’s music combines percussive jazz piano with the playing style of New Orleans’ late great Professor Longhair. An eight-time W.C. Handy “Best Blues Instrumentalist – Piano” award nominee, Butler—who was blinded by glaucoma since birth—is a classically trained musician on piano and vocals.

In the course of his long, illustrious career, he’s done it all: 10 albums under his own name, dozens of collaborations with major musicians ranging from the late Freddie Hubbard to Soul Asylum, and appearances at major festivals and club venues around the globe. Butler also was just featured prominently throughout last Sunday’s episode of the HBO series Treme.

In 2005, Butler’s home in the lower ninth ward of New Orleans, along with his beloved grand piano, was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. Although he now lives in Brooklyn, New York, he remains true to his New Orleans roots, playing his soulful and heartfelt music with a rollicking blues and funk band that will make you want to leap from your seats and dance. Don’t miss Henry Butler at Reston Town Center on June 11!

About the Dentists at Smiles at Reston Town Center: (Read full bios at www.rtcsmiles.com)
Dr. Riaz Rayek always dreamed of being a doctor. “Medicine was a popular pursuit for my extended family,” he says. “Aunts, uncles, cousins… almost everyone chose a career in health care. It’s in our blood!”
Dr. Grace Lee – In addition to dentistry and family, Dr. Lee’s interest is community outreach. Her dental outreach efforts include involvement in the Northern Virginia Volunteer Dental Clinic, which provides comprehensive oral health care services to indigent adults as well as a visit to Albania to provide dental care.
Dr. Nassir Barekzi – Patients express nothing but gratitude from Dr. Barekzi’s gentle hand and excellent chair-side manner. Dr. Maya Bachour is an award-winning dentist, selected as one of America’s Top Dentists by the Consumer Research Council of America. Her radiant presence, beautiful smile and charismatic personality warm the heart of all who meet her.
Dr. Bob Leipzig builds dental practices based on a commitment to quality, state-of-the art dentistry, and exceptionally gentle patient care. Smiles at Reston Town Center is a long time dream coming to fruition for him.
